9 warning signs worth catching early

  1. A toilet that keeps running or refills by itself. Usually a worn fill valve or flush seal. A running cistern can waste hundreds of litres a day.
  2. Water around the base of the toilet. Often the pan connector or seal underneath. Left alone, it can rot flooring.
  3. Drains that gurgle or empty slowly, especially more than one. When several fittings play up at once, the blockage is usually in the main line, not the sink.
  4. A hot water relief valve that drips all the time. A few drops while the tank heats is normal. A steady drip means the valve is worn.
  5. Rusty hot water, or water pooling under the tank. Often a sign the tank is corroding inside and nearing the end of its life.
  6. Damp patches, bubbling paint or mould near a bathroom or kitchen. Can mean a hidden leak in the wall.
  7. A water meter that moves when every tap is off. Turn everything off, note the meter, check again in an hour. If it has moved, there’s a leak somewhere.
  8. An outside drain or gully that overflows in rain or smells. A sign of a blockage or a broken pipe further down.
  9. Low pressure at one tap only. Often a blocked aerator or a valve that’s partly closed. A cheap fix if caught early.
