The growth corridor
Coomera, Upper Coomera, Pimpama and Ormeau make up the northern Gold Coast growth corridor, and Pimpama has been one of the fastest growing areas in Queensland. Most homes here are recent, built in new estates with PVC drainage and modern hot water systems.
Newer homes still have plumbing problems. Drains block from wipes, fat and nappies, taps and toilets wear, and hot water systems need servicing. If your home is new enough to be under the builder’s warranty, check that first, as some defects are the builder’s to fix.
Older suburbs on the Broadwater
Closer to the water the homes are older. Labrador became a suburb of Southport in the early post-war years, with many of its beachfront streets laid out in the 1950s. Runaway Bay was tidal wetland until it was bought for canal estates in 1967, with the first earthworks in 1972. At Paradise Point, a flood-prone street grid was replaced by a canal estate. Coombabah grew through the 1990s and 2000s, and Hope Island is known for its canal and marina estates.
Much of this land is low-lying and was reshaped from wetland. In the older canal-side homes, drains may be several decades old, and outdoor fittings near salt water can corrode faster than inland.
Council and private pipes
The City of Gold Coast is the water and sewerage provider for the whole city. It maintains sewer pipes from the main to the connection point, and owners look after the drains and inspection openings on their side. If you have no water and your street is not listed on the council’s water and sewerage alerts, call the City on 1300 000 928.
